This is basically a "country" bus operated by SMT (Scottish Motor Traction); and in that era, was not allowed to pick up or drop passengers within the city boundary except at a few widespread locations. This was part of an agreement with Edinburgh Corporation Transport.
So it was not considered locally to be an "Edinburgh bus"; but generally referred to as an "SMT bus".

Edinburgh Corporation Daimler bus, part of the early post-war replacement vehicle fleet.
In the background can be seen two SMT single-deckers. From their positions in St Andrew's Square, they are probably on services going down to Musselburgh and beyond into East Lothian.
